What cookies and device storage are

A cookie is a small piece of data a website stores in your browser. Websites and apps can also keep small pieces of data on your device in local storage. Either can be essential, needed for a service you asked for, or optional, such as for analytics or marketing.

The categories we use

Essential: always on

• bw_session keeps you signed in on the website. It is set when you sign in, removed when you sign out, and expires after 30 days. It holds a random token, not your personal details, and page scripts cannot read it.
• bw_consent remembers your cookie choice, as a cookie and a copy in local storage, for 12 months.
• bw.place, in local storage, remembers the place you search from (a city and area, or your location if you chose “Near you”) so you do not have to pick it again. It is sent to us only as part of a search.
• Google sign-in: if you use Continue with Google, Google’s sign-in service loads from accounts.google.com and may read or set its own cookies, for example to know that you are signed in to Google and to remember that you closed its prompt (g_state). It loads only where the Google button is shown, and Google controls these cookies under its own policies.

Analytics: off unless you agree

Analytics cookies would help us understand how Betta Work is used, so we can improve it. None are in use today. If we add any, they will load only after you agree.

Marketing: off unless you agree

The website shows ads beside the page on wide screens. Our own ads and promoted professionals set no cookies: we count how many times each ad is seen and clicked, as totals, never by person. Ads from Google (AdSense) and other ad networks load only if you accept marketing cookies. They may then set cookies to measure and personalise ads, under their own policies; Google explains how at policies.google.com/technologies/ads. If you reject marketing cookies, those ads never load. The Betta Work app shows Google AdMob banner ads to people without a subscription. They are not personalised; Google may use your device’s advertising ID to count views and clicks and prevent fraud, and you can reset it or opt out in your phone’s settings.

How consent works

• On your first visit to the website, a banner asks for your choice: Accept all, Reject optional, or Manage to choose category by category. Rejecting is as easy as accepting, and Betta Work works fully either way.
• Your choice is stored in your browser as bw_consent for 12 months. After that, or if we add a new category, we ask again.
• You can change your choice at any time with Cookie settings, in the website’s footer and Account, or on this page. Withdrawing consent does not affect anything that happened before.

Our legal basis

Essential cookies and storage are strictly necessary to provide the service you ask for, such as staying signed in, so they do not need your consent. For analytics and marketing cookies, our legal basis under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 is your consent, which you are free to refuse or withdraw at any time.

In the app

The Betta Work app does not use cookies. It keeps two things on your phone: your sign-in token, so you stay signed in (removed when you sign out, and valid for at most 180 days), and your chosen place, as on the website.

What we do not do

No cross-site tracking of our own, no third-party advertising scripts unless you accept marketing cookies, and no selling of anything cookies record.

Controlling cookies in your browser

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block bw_session, you will not be able to stay signed in on the website. Clearing your browser’s site data also clears your saved place and your cookie choice, so the banner will ask again.
