Privacy Policy
Last updated: 25 September 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what personal data Betta Work collects when you use our website, bettawork.ng, and our phone app, why we collect it, who can see it, how long we keep it, and the rights you have under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA).
In short: we collect what we need to connect customers with professionals. We do not sell your data, and we do not show ads.
Who we are
Betta Work (“we”, “us”) is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. You can reach us at hello@bettawork.ng.
For anything about your data, including using your rights, email hello@bettawork.ng with “Privacy” in the subject line. Our data protection contact reads these messages.
The data we collect
When you create an account
- Your name, email address and phone number. A phone number is required, because it is how a professional reaches you about a job.
- Your password, which we store only as a salted one-way hash. We cannot read it.
- If you choose Continue with Google: your Google account ID, email address, name and profile picture, which Google shares with us. We never receive your Google password.
- A profile photo, if you add one. It shows beside your name wherever you appear: to professionals you send requests to, on reviews you leave, and in your account. You can change or remove it at any time from Account.
If you list a business
- Your business name, your trade (or the trade you describe yourself), your services, prices and description.
- Your business phone numbers, including which is your main number and which is on WhatsApp.
- Your profile photo and photos of your work.
- Your city and area and, if you choose “Use my location”, the exact point your business works from.
- Whether you have switched “Available now” on, and when you last used Betta Work, which decides whether you are shown as available.
When you use Betta Work
- Requests you send or receive: the job description, when you need it, the address or area you give, your phone number, and the messages exchanged on the request.
- Reviews you write (a star rating and comment) and replies professionals write to them.
- Reports you make about a professional: the reason and any note.
- The professionals you save.
- When a signed-in person taps Call or WhatsApp on a profile, a record that it happened, which counts towards the professional’s contact figure.
- The notifications we send you in the app and by email.
Your location
When you choose “Near you” or let Betta Work use your location, your device’s location is used to measure the distance to professionals. For a search, it is sent with the search and not saved to your account; your chosen place is remembered on your device only (see the Cookie Policy). For a professional, the point you save is kept with your business profile. You can turn location off in your device settings and choose a city and area instead.
Technical data
Our servers process your IP address, device and browser type, and the time of each visit, to run Betta Work and keep it secure, for example to slow down password guessing. We store the device type with each signed-in session.
We do not ask for sensitive personal data such as your religion, health, ethnicity or biometrics. We do not collect card or bank details, because payment for jobs does not go through Betta Work. We do not read your phone’s contacts.
How we use your data, and our legal basis
The NDPA allows us to process personal data only on a lawful basis. For each use, this is ours:
- To create and run your account, show your business profile, run search, send requests and messages, and email you about them. Basis: performing our contract with you, the Terms of Service.
- To measure distances from your location. Basis: your consent, given when you allow location access. You can withdraw it at any time in your device settings.
- To keep Betta Work safe and trustworthy: preventing fraud and abuse, investigating reports, keeping ratings honest, and securing accounts. Basis: our legitimate interests, and our users’, in a safe marketplace.
- To work out a professional’s public figures: rating, jobs done, response time and number of contacts. Basis: legitimate interests; these are what customers rely on to choose.
- To comply with the law, answer lawful requests from authorities, and establish or defend legal claims. Basis: legal obligation, and legitimate interests.
- To tell you about important changes to our terms or this policy. Basis: legal obligation and our contract with you.
We do not use your personal data to choose which ads you see, and we do not sell it. The website shows ads beside the page on wide screens: our own ads and promoted professionals are the same for everyone, and ads from Google or other ad networks load only if you accept marketing cookies (see the Cookie Policy). The app shows Google AdMob banner ads, not personalised, to people without a subscription. Search results are ordered automatically (the closest good professional first), which only decides the order you see. The one automatic step that affects someone is the temporary hiding of a profile after several reports, which a person always reviews (see Community Guidelines).
What other people can see
- A professional’s profile is public: business name, trade, services and prices, photos, description, city and area, distance from the viewer, rating, reviews and replies, jobs done, response time, and whether they are available now. Public profiles and reviews can be seen by anyone and are indexed by search engines.
- A professional’s phone and WhatsApp numbers are shown only to people who are signed in. Everyone else sees a masked number. We never put phone numbers in the pages or data we give search engines.
- An exact location is never published. Other people see a city and area, and how far away it is.
- Reviews show the reviewer’s first name and initial, for example “Ada O.”.
- When you send a request, the professional sees your name, the phone number you gave, the job details, and the address or area you entered. Your email address is never shown to other users.
- Messages on a request are seen only by the customer and the professional, and by our team when needed to look into a report or a problem.
Transfers outside Nigeria
Our hosting and email providers may store or process data on servers outside Nigeria. When personal data leaves Nigeria, we rely on the grounds the NDPA allows: a country or arrangement the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) recognises as giving adequate protection, or contract terms that require the recipient to protect your data to the NDPA’s standard. You can ask us for details of the safeguards we use.
How long we keep it
- Your account and business profile: while your account is open. When you delete your account, we delete or anonymise them straight away (see Request Account Deletion).
- Signed-in sessions: until you sign out, and at most 30 days on the website and 180 days in the app.
- Password reset codes: they expire after 20 minutes, and are deleted a day later.
- Requests, messages and reviews: kept, because they are part of both people’s history and a professional’s rating. When one person deletes their account, their name and contact details are removed and they are shown as “Deleted user”. The words written in a request or message stay as written.
- Reports: kept while the reported profile exists, so a pattern of problems can be seen.
- Copies of emails we send you: 90 days, or until you delete your account if that is sooner.
- Technical logs: only as long as needed for security and fixing faults.
We may keep specific data for longer where the law requires it, or to deal with a legal claim or a fraud investigation.
Your rights
Under the NDPA you have the right to:
- be told how your data is used, which is what this policy does;
- get a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
- have inaccurate or incomplete data corrected. You can edit most of it yourself in Account and Your business;
- have your data deleted. You can delete your account yourself at any time;
- ask us to restrict how we use your data while a concern is looked into;
- receive the data you gave us in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format, or have it sent to another organisation where that is technically possible;
- object to our use of your data based on legitimate interests;
- withdraw your consent at any time, for example to location access, without affecting what was done before;
- not be subject to a decision based only on automated processing that has legal or similarly significant effects on you.
To use any of these rights, email hello@bettawork.ng from the address on your account. We may ask you to confirm your identity. We will answer within 30 days, free of charge.
If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission at ndpc.gov.ng.
How we protect your data
- Data travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS).
- Passwords are stored only as salted one-way hashes. Sign-in sessions are random tokens, stored hashed, and end when you sign out. Resetting your password signs you out on every other device.
- Rate limits slow down password guessing and bulk copying of listings.
- Only the people who run and moderate Betta Work can access personal data, and only when their work needs it.
No system is perfectly secure. If a personal data breach is likely to put your rights and freedoms at risk, we will notify the NDPC within 72 hours of becoming aware of it and tell you without undue delay, as the NDPA requires.
Children
Betta Work is for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has created an account, email hello@bettawork.ng and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy, we update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
